Granada Hills is predominantly a single-family-home community, and most residents own their homes. The neighborhood's density is among the lowest in the City of Los Angeles, with a suburban lot pattern that distinguishes it from more tightly built parts of the Valley. Housing spans mid-century ranch and traditional styles developed as the Valley grew, set along tree-lined residential streets, with larger foothill lots in the northern portions near the Santa Susana Mountains. Granada Hills stretches from the flat southern sections along the State Route 118 corridor up into the foothills of the Santa Susana Mountains to the north. The northern tier, near O'Melveny Park, is marked by hillside streets and access to trails, while the southern and central areas are more traditional Valley suburban blocks. The neighborhood is bordered by Porter Ranch to the west, Northridge and North Hills to the south, and Mission Hills and Sylmar to the east, placing it at a residential crossroads of the northern San Fernando Valley.

Granada Hills has a relaxed, family-oriented suburban feel. Its streets are largely residential, with single-family homes and a pace that is quieter than many parts of the Los Angeles Basin. The neighborhood's defining amenity is outdoor access: O'Melveny Park and the Santa Susana Mountains foothills put hiking, picnicking, and birdwatching within a short drive of most homes. Shopping and services cluster along the area's main commercial corridors, while the broader San Fernando Valley provides additional dining, retail, and cultural options nearby. Granada Hills is served primarily by the Los Angeles Unified School District, with a concentration of campuses within and around the neighborhood. The area is also home to Granada Hills Charter, an independent public charter school widely known for strong academic achievement. In all, the neighborhood has roughly fourteen public and ten private schools, giving families a range of options without leaving the community. The presence of a large, well-regarded charter alongside traditional LAUSD schools is a defining feature of the local education landscape.

The Ronald Reagan Freeway (State Route 118) runs through the southern edge of Granada Hills, providing the neighborhood's primary east-west connection across the northern San Fernando Valley and linking to the broader Los Angeles freeway system. Surface arterials such as Balboa Boulevard connect residents to surrounding Valley communities, and the neighborhood's position keeps the I-5 and I-405 corridors within reach. Commuters heading to job centers across the Valley and the greater Los Angeles area rely on these freeway connections, with local streets serving day-to-day travel.

Granada Hills' recreational centerpiece is O'Melveny Park, a roughly 672-acre public park in the Santa Susana Mountains and the second-largest park in the City of Los Angeles after Griffith Park. It offers wide lawns, picnic areas, and a network of trails, including the O'Melveny Trail toward Mission Point, along with birdwatching and sweeping hillside views. The park's mix of oak woodland, chaparral, and riparian habitat makes it a notable stop for migratory birds. City recreation centers and sports programs round out the neighborhood's outdoor offerings.
